As a service to you, the Lafayette Public Library subscribes to a wide variety of online databases that contain information on a variety of subjects.  Here you will find sites that provide access to online learning, homework help, magazine articles, newspaper articles (including The Daily Advertiser), test-taking practice and tips, career and job-seeking resources, health information, business information, a language-learning tool, automotive repair help, genealogy resources and more.

Alphabetic Listing of Databases

  ABCmouse – Library Edition - (in-library use only) ABCmouse offers a comprehensive online curriculum for children ages 2–8+, including reading and language arts, math, beginning science, social studies, art and music.  Stimulate a child’s enthusiasm for learning through over 9,000 interactive learning activities—including books, educational games, puzzles, art activities, songs, music videos, and more. View in Library does not require a login or account.  You can use it on any computer in the library system.

 

Acadiana Advocate Collection – Database that contains full image text of The Acadiana Advocate. View the paper online the same way you would in print! Updated daily. Database provided by Newsbank.

 

Ancestry.com Library Edition – Online source of genealogical and historical information, consists of over 1.2 billion records in over 3,000 databases. (in-library use only)

 Barron’s-   A weekly magazine, Barron’s provides U.S. financial information, stock market developments, investment strategies, and relevant statistics. Lafayette Public Library provides a digital full-image edition of this magazine, with issues running from 2008 to a week before the current date. Database provided by ProQuest.

 

Book Index With Reviews - Search for various books using a variety of criteria such as grade level, publication date, and number of pages. (EBSCO database)

 

Britannica e-STAX - Hundreds of full color and black and white non-fiction e-books for ages preschool to 18.

CINAHL – (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) The authoritative resource for nursing and allied health professionals, students, educators and researchers. This database provides indexing for more than 3,000 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health. cloudLibrary by Bibliotheca – cloudLibrary offers a digital collection lending platform of ebooks, audiobooks, comic books, magazines, and digital newspapers all in one easy-to-use app. The new platform gives patrons access to materials owned by 34 other Louisiana libraries through cloudLink. That is a pool of more than 250,000 shareable copies!

cloudLibrary also includes Comic Plus and NewsStand. Comics Plus will provide patrons with over 25,000 digital comics, graphic novels, and manga. Through NewsStand, patrons can access over 7,500 digital magazines and newspapers.

The app is free and available for Apple products, Android products, Chrome, Kindle Fire, Nook e-reader, Kobo e-reader, and Windows products. The app can be found in the App store (iOS) or in Google Play (Android). Once the app is downloaded, patrons can simply log in once using their Lafayette Public Library card. Exceptional Lives is an independent non-profit organization that provides free, trustworthy, easy-to-follow information for parents and caregivers of children and young adults with disabilities. They offer Interactive How-To Guides, a Searchable Resource Directory and Personal Support through a Helpline that provides free support by phone or email.

 

 Explora Quick Search - Reliable content from the world’s leading magazines and reference books in the EBSCO databases.  Homework Louisiana offers FREE online tutoring and academic resources from Tutor.com for Louisiana residents. Through a partnership between the State Library of Louisiana and Lafayette Public Library System, live tutors and access to study resources through Homework Louisiana are now available 24/7 from within the public library, from home or from campus.

Sanborn Maps - The Sanborn Map Company played a vital role in the development of fire insurance map making in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Founded by D.A. Sanborn in 1867, the company created hand-made and colored lithograph maps of over 12,000 cities and towns across the United States and set the standard for fire insurance maps of the era. Today, Sanborn Maps provide us with a detailed understanding of the physical makeup of these cities and towns and give us insight into the existing social, political, and economic conditions in specific places and times.
