Free watercolor painting workshop taught by professional artist, Kate Ferry.   The workshop is designed for beginners and students will paint Edward Hopper’s “Lighthouse and Buildings, Portland Head, Cape Elizabeth, Main.”   All materials will be supplied by the library. The Friends of the Library fall book sale begins with the Friends Preview Sale Night on Wednesday, September 15^th and continues through Sunday, September 19^th at the Main Library downtown. Sunday will be Clearance Day. Thousands of books, CDs, DVD’s and books on audio will be sold at bargain prices

The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, in partnership with Target Corporation and affiliate state centers for the book, annually invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to enter the Letters about Literature competition.

With the involvement of teachers, librarians, parents, the Louisiana Writing Project and most importantly the participating students themselves, last year’s sponsorship of Letters About Literature by the Louisiana Center for the Book resulted in an amazing 1,289 entries, an increase from just 42 entries the year before; and one Louisiana entry was chosen as a national finalist.

“We were so pleased with last year’s huge increase in student participation rate in Letters About Literature,” said State Librarian Rebecca Hamilton. “I think we can all agree on the importance of encouraging our youngsters to read. This particular program is one more way we can accomplish this goal. By sitting down and truly giving thought to how the story impacted the reader, Letters About Literature creates a personal bond among a young reader, the story and the storyteller,” she said.

To enter, the student reader writes a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre–fiction, nonfiction or poetry, contemporary or classic–explaining how that author’s work, whether book, short story, poem, essay or speech, changed the reader’s way of thinking about the world or themselves. The submission, in the form of a personal letter rather than a book report or fan letter, should express how the chosen book has impacted the reader’s life or worldview. 

There are three competition levels:

• Level I for students in grades 4 through 6
• Level II for grades 7 and 8
• Level III, grades 9 – 12. 

Entrants must be 9 years of age or older as of 9/1/10.  Grant levels refer to the 2010-11 school year.

The Letters About Literature contest is now open, and submissions must be sent directly to the national Letters About Literature address at: Letters About Literature; Competition Level (Indicate level 1, 2 or 3) ; P.O. Box 609; Dallas, PA 18612. Submissions must be postmarked by Friday, December 10, 2010, and received by LAL Central no later than Monday, December 20, 2010.  Submissions inappropriately sent to the Louisiana Center for the Book will not be forwarded or returned.  Further information and detailed entry guidelines for Letters About Literature and the required downloadable entry coupon may be found at www.LettersAboutLiterature.org .  Home schooled students are encouraged to also participate.

Interactive training offered in budgeting skills, savings ideas, understanding credit, and identity theft prevention and recovery. The discussion on credit will include what makes up a good credit report, creating a good credit score, and repairing a credit score.
